Lima is a delight to walk around. There are so many plazas around the city centre that you can saunter between them for a day while admiring the colonial buildings on the streets separating each square.
Plaza San Martin is a good place to start. Flanked by flower beds on all sides, it was named after General San Martin and a statue of the highly ranked soldier dominates the square. Jirón de la Unión, a pedestrian street which is always buzzing, connects this square to Plaza Mayor (previously known as Plaza de Armas), the main square of ‘old Lima’.
Around Plaza Mayor are many more points of interest, mainly the Presidential and Archbishop’s Palaces, along with the hugely impressive cathedral. The city’s main place of worship has been destroyed by earthquakes over the centuries, although the present restructure is based on the original plans and strongly resembles the original building.
There is a wealth of museums around the city which are dedicated to everything from history to art to weapons. Between them they give you a deeper insight into life in Peru.

This museum documents Peru’s history better than any other in the country. Dating right back to the history of the Incas, it is spaced out over 3 floors and is one Peru’s most important museums. Different exhibitions give you an insight into life in ancient Peru.

This large baroque style cathedral has been battling against earthquakes for centuries but is still standing. Thousands of visitors pass through its dark brown doorway, while each side of this stands two bell towers. Not far from Plaza Mayor and Lima Cathedral, it is worth the short walk to see another of Lima's churches.

If you are looking to get away from the busy streets for a few hours than this park south of San Martin is the perfect place to go. Within the park are Japanese gardens, an amphitheatre and acres of grounds to relax or go for walks.

Lima enjoys a hot climate in the summer months and the beaches in Miraflores and Barranco are perfect for some sunbathing or swimming.

The Mercado Central Market occupies a whole block. With stalls selling anything and everything you are bound to find something of interest to you at this market.
There is also a Handicraft market near Miraflores. If you are looking for a momentum from Peru it is worth paying this market on Petit Thouars a visit.
