About Lima, Peru

As it is the gateway to Machu Picchu, and it commands vistas of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Andes on the other, Lima is one of the most fascinating capital cities in South America.

Formerly known as the ‘City of Kings’, the Peruvian capital was founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, making it South America’s second oldest city. As it grew it developed much colonial charm and many of the buildings were built in colonial style. While many were destroyed, the city has been rebuilt on many occasions over the years.

Some of the city’s original buildings are still standing today but, as you would expect there are far more modern and concrete buildings.

The city’s population has also escalated dramatically over the last 80-90 years, creating a more noticeable divide between rich and poor.
